Ryf remarkable again

Heading into the Ironman African Championship it would have been hard to find anyone who wasn't predicting that Daniela Ryf would take the women's title. She did just that, but the defending champ, Kaisa Lehtonan (FIN) kept her honest to the line.

Ryf had some company in the water as Kate Comber led the way out of the water (both were clocked in 53:48), but once on the bike there was no stopping Ryf, who posted the day's fastest bike (4:50:50) and run (2:57:27) to hold off Lehtonen by 5:24 at the finish line. Ryf would finish the day in 8:47:02, adding another impressive sub-9 time to her resume.

Great Britain's Susie Cheetam rounded out the podium in 9:04:49.

Hoffman hangs on

Defending men's champion Ben Hoffman (USA) was pushed right to the line by Germany's Nils Frommhold, but the American hung tough to take the men's race and guarantee himself another start in Kona.

There was a three-man breakaway group on the bike including Frommhold, Wurf and Hoffman who ended up in T2 well ahead of the rest of the stacked field. Wurf started the run ahead of the German and American, but the marathon quickly became a two-man race at the front. Hoffman blazed through the first half-marathon in 1:18, but Frommold stayed in touch and would eventually claw the American's lead back to just 13 seconds with 10 km to go.

Hoffman found another gear, though and pulled away to a 50-second win (7:58:40 to 7:59:30). David McNamee rounded out the podium in 8:07:31.
