A raft of Olympians will be on hand for this year's Escape from Alcatraz triathlon on June 11 in San Francisco. Six athletes who competed in Rio will be in the field including Ben Kanute, Greg Billington, Katie Zaferes, Flora Duffy, Erin Densham and Barbara Riveros. Added to that list is last year's champion Holly Lawrence, 2012 Olympian Paula Findlay and 2004 Olympian Andy Potts, a six-time champion of the event.

“I can’t wait to defend my title at the Escape from Alcatraz Triathlon this year,” said 2016 Escape from Alcatraz Triathlon champion Lawrence. “Racing the course is the only way to prepare for this race. I hope that my experience last year on the course will help me line up against this year’s fierce competition.”

The race, which started in 1981, begins with a 1.5-mile (2.4 km) swim from the infamous Alcatraz Island, formerly the site of one of America's most famous prisons, to the Marina Green. After that there's a technical, challenging 18-mile bike course through the Presidio followed by an eight-mile (12.9 km) run out to Baker Beach that includes a challenging climb up the famous 400-step "Sand Ladder."
