Flying through the run

Mauricio Mendez overcame a four-minute deficit on Tim O'Donnell during the run to take Ironman 70.3 Texas. Mendez took the Xterra World Championship last year just two years after he turned pro - at 20 he is the youngest ever to take the Xterra title.

O'Donnell seemed to have the race in control, riding away from the rest of the field and posting a blazing 2:02:06 bike split. His run was good enough to hold off the entire field save Mendez, who caught the American in the closing few kms of the race to take his third Ironman 70.3 title.

Rounding out the podium was Rodolphe Von Berg.

Morrison rules the bike

It wasn't a surprise to see Brit Kimberly Morrison dominate the bike in Galveston - she's one of the best cyclists in the sport. What was surprising was how domanant Morrison was - her 2:10:38 split annihilated the rest of the women's field. Despite giving swim-leader Lauren Brandon a three-minute lead after the swim, she still entered T2 almost seven minutes ahead of the American and was over 11 minutes up on Maja Stage-Nielsen, the third woman off the bike.

No one would be able to catch Morrison, although Austria's Michaela Herlbauer did managed to make it interesting, erasing all but 2:20 of her 12-minute deficit off the bike to run her way to second. Brandon held on for third, 45-seconds ahead of Linsey Corbin.
