Germany's Michael Raelert continued his upward trajectory with a big win at the Ironman 70.3 European Championship in Elsinore, while Annabel Luxford (AUS) put together an equally as convincing win to take the women's title.

Raelert's return

After spending much of 2016 dealing with health issues, Raelert, the two-time Ironman 70.3 World Champion, has been steadily improving. Two weeks ago he was a solid third to Lionel Sanders and countryman (and fellow two-time 70.3 world champ) Sebastian Kienle at the Challenge Championship. He followed that big day up with his first 70.3 title since Miami in 2015 thanks to the day's fastest swim, a solid bike that put he and countrymen Andi Boecherer and Nils Frommhold clear and an impressive run that pulled him clear to take the win.

Boecherer hung tough for second, while Frommhold rounded out the podium.

Luxford runs away

Annabel Luxford is always tough over the 70.3 distance and this weekend was no different as the Australian led the pro women out of the water and then, along with swim-lead-partners, Dane's Camilla Pedersen and Helle Frederiksen, blasted away on the bike to enter T2 just behind Pedersen and just ahead of Frederiksen. Those three were clear of the rest of the women's field and would contest for the overall win.

Frederiksen, who is coming off an injury, was aggressive early in the run, but would eventually have to settle for second to the Australian. She was thrilled with her podium finish in Elsinore - it was a nice return to racing in Denmark, something she hasn't done sine 2012. Pedersen would hang on to round out the poidum.
