Bad news for Spanish triathlon fans: Olympic favorite Javier Gomez, who has won the last three ITU World Triathlon Series titles, has withdrawn from the Olympics due to a bike crash that left him with a broken elbow.

"It was one of those stupid crashes where I wasn't even traveling 15 kph," says Javier Gomez of the crash that has put him out of the Olympic Games next month.
After being rushed to the hospital the Spaniard was diagnosed with a fracture of the radial head of his elbow.
Gomez will have the elbow operated on today, but Gomez won't have enough time to recover before the Olympics in August.
"The smartest thing to do is to release my place and give someone else a chance to compete," he says.
