Matt Hanson (USA) managed to get to the line ahead of the defending world champion (Australian Tim Reed) and the 2009 Ironman 70.3 world champion (American Andy Potts) to take the men's title. American Haley Chura annihilated the women's field in the swim and never looked back as she hung on to lead the women across the line.

Topping the world champs

As a former collegiate swimmer, it was no surprise to see Potts lead the way out of the water, but he had company in the form of Australian Christian Kemp who was one second back. Reed was 22 seconds behind starting the ride. After trailing by 1:36 after the swim, Hanson would ride his way to the front of the race, enjoying a 44-second lead on Reed (and 1:22-second lead on Potts) into T2. Hanson would then run away from the rest of the men thanks to a 1:11:20 split that left him well ahead across the line. Reed took the battle of the world champs, finishing ahead of Potts, who rounded out the podium.

Chura from start to finish

Chura enjoyed a lead of over three minutes on countrywoman Jessica Smith starting the bike, with favorites, American Linsey Corbin (3:22) and Canada's Jen Annett (6:13) well behind. Annett put together an amazing 2:25:44 bike split to get her into T2 just five seconds behind Chura. On the run, though, Chura proved too strong for the Canadian, running almost 2:30 faster to take the win. Annett would hang tough for second, while Corbin would run her way to third.
