After being forced to miss the Olympics last summer due to an injury, Javier Gomez made a triumphant return to racing with an impressive run to take the first leg of the "Triple Crown" (Ironman 70.3 Dubai, the Ironman 70.3 World Championship and Ironman 70.3 Bahrain).

In second place after the swim, Gomez was ninth off the bike, three-minutes down, but then ran his way to the title.

"I was happy to win 70.3 Dubai today," he said after the race. "I struggled a lot on this very flat course two years ago, so I decided to come back, face my weaknesses and try to do better. Congrats to the guys on the podium, they made me dig very deep to win this one."

Those other two on the podium included Australia's Josh Amberger and Switzerland's Ruedi Wild.

Ryf rides away

Daniela Ryf continued her winning streak in Dubai, riding into the lead at the 22 km point of the flat, fast course and then pulling away halfway through the ride. Only Ellie Salthouse (AUS) and Kimberly Morrison (GBR) were able to stay close on the bike, but Ryf dominated the run to finish three minutes ahead of Salthouse as she crossed the line.
