Duffy and Mola tops in Yokohama

Flora Duffy returned with a win, while Mario Mola's top finish puts him atop the series standings at a wet WTS Yokohama.

Conditions were wet, cold and treacherous at the ITU World Triathlon Yokohama today, but that didn't stop Flora Duffy (BER) from a triumphant return to start her title defense. Last year's men's champion, Mario Mola (ESP), also moved himself to the top of the WTS standings thanks to a second win of the season.

Mola runs to another win

Jonathan Brownlee looked to be on track for a big return to WTS racing as he led the way out of the water, but in the cold, wet conditions the bike leg turned into a battle of survival. A huge lead group of 30 gradually whittled down to about 20 in the closing kms of the 40 km bike, with the chase group a solid two minutes back for most of the way.

Brownlee was part of a crash near T2 that put him out of contention for the win - the Brit would gallantly run his bike into transition and would eventually finish 42nd. Kristian Blummenfelt (NOR) and Henri Schoeman (RSA) were the early frontrunners, but Mola moved to the front by the end of the first lap of the run and never looked back as he cruised to the win.

Schoeman, Blummenfelt and Spaniard Fernando Alarza were left to duke things out for the silver and bronze medals. Alarza got himself clear for the silver while Blummenfelt managed a late surge on the blue carpet to round out the podium.

“I am very happy obviously, it has been a very good day for me. On the bike we had to be careful. We saw at the end I think it was Jonny who had a crash with so many others. But with this day you never know what is going to happen, today luckily it worked well for me so I am very pleased with it,” Mola said after the race.

Duffy dominates

Sophie Coldwell (GBR) and Duffy were part of a group of five who came out of the water ahead of the pack and managed to break away together on the bike a few km into the wet ride. The two were over a minute clear on a chase pack of 10 heading into T2. Along the way there were numerous crashes, including one by Great Britain's Non Stanford that put her out of the running. (The only woman to have won a WTS race this year, Andrea Hewitt, was well back off the bike and never challenged for the win.)

Duffy quickly dropped Coldwell on the run and would cruise to a 1:51 win. Americans Katie Zaferes with the silver and Kirsten Kasper would eventually get passed Coldwell and duel for the final two spots on the podium - Zaferes would capture the silver leaving Kasper to take bronze in her first trip to a WTS podium.

“I didn’t know what I would have in the tank for today, I was pretty nervous coming into the race today, I felt like a WTS first-timer, but I had to keep reminding myself that I am the World Champ and I need to ride with confidence. So the race worked out great to my strengths and I am super happy,” said Duffy.
