Sarah Crowley's magical year that includes wins in Cairns and Frankfurt continued with a big win at the ITU Long Distance World Championship in Penticton, B.C., Canada. The Australian managed to outrun Helle Frederiksen (DEN) to take the title. Canadian Lionel Sanders also had to come from behind on the run to take the men's race after flatting on the bike and losing four minutes while he replaced the tube. Once on the run, though, the Canadian passed swim and bike leader Josh Amberger (AUS) to take the win. It was a first world title for both Crowley and Sanders.

Sanders thrills Canadian crowd

At yesterday's press conference Josh Amberger's race strategy got called out, so it came as no surprise that the Australian, who had told us all he would do his best to hammer through the swim and bike and open up as big a lead as possible, was in the front at the end of the swim (36:29). He did have some company, though, in the form of Pablo Gonzalez. Sanders would hit the beach just over four minutes later, a solid swim for the Canadian.

Once on the bike Amberger continued the second half of his Saturday-presser-promise by hammering on the bike, but Sanders was going equally as hard and steadily gained time on the Australian. Heading into the final lap at about 75 km the gap was down to 2:30 as Sanders flew by with Sudrie close behind. At 90 km the difference was 90 seconds, but then Sanders got the flat and would end up coming into T2 over seven minutes behind.

On the run, though, it quickly became clear that Sanders would eventually run everyone ahead of him down. By the end of hte first of three 10 km loops the Canadian was in second place and just 3:30 behind Amberger. Sanders took the lead at 23 km and continued to charge to the line, earning his first world championship title.

Amberger was a solid second, while fellow Aussie Joe Gambles had a brilliant last 10 km of the run, passing Sudrie and holding off Andy Potts to round out the podium. Potts hung on for fourth, followed by fellow American Drew Scott.

Crowley continues winning streak

Sarah Crowley has been unstoppable since taking the Ironman Asia-Pacific Championship in Cairns - she followed that big win up with the Ironman European title in Frankfurt just a few months later. After stumbling in the shallow water as she ran into the water at the start, the Australian didn't have a great swim, exiting the water 3:28 behind the lead swim pack that included Jennifer Spieldenner (USA), Helle Frederiksen (DEN), Leanda CAve (GBR), Camilla Pedersen (DEN) and Rachel McBride (CAN). Heather Wurtele (CAN) came out of the water with Crowley and the two alternated turns up in front of the chase, trying to make up ground on the women ahead of them.

Which they did - although Frederiksen, who was competing in her first race longer than a half, managed to hold them off with a couple of minute advantage into T2. Out on the run course, though, no one could match Crowley's tempo and by about the half-way point of the 30 km run she had pulled away from Wurtele and taken the lead from Frederiksen. Crowley's fastest bike and run splits for the day were enough to get her the world championship title. Frederiksen hung tough to finish second, while Wurtele rounded out the podium.
